The Michigan State Fair in Detroit 1948, Goodings Show is on the midway. The show seems to be having a huge day during this matinee. Two things are starkly appearant in this photo. 1: Everybody is well dressed. Not a single person is wearing a T shirt and jeans that I can see. 2: where are all the black people? This seems to be an all white crowd. This is Detroit after all... The changes to this city have been dramatic and heartbreaking. A society's wealth can be measured by what they consider "disposable income"..that is, money they have left over from buying bare necessities. In 1948 factories were producing goods at an incrediabl rate and everyone that wanted one, had good, well paying jobs. Factories hadn't downsized, mechanized, outsourced or high tec'd all our treasure away in the name of efficency yet. This picture, showing a beautiful city of wealth and prosperity, is in stark contast to what we see today in the rubble of what is modern Detroit. I think We will never see a midway like this in Detroit again.
