Welcome to the American Midway Archives, a living historical library dedicated to preserving the people, companies, traditions, innovations, and stories that shaped the American traveling amusement industry.
This archive was created from a simple belief:
Every story matters.
The history of the American Midway was not built by a handful of famous showmen. It was built by thousands of dreamers, immigrants, entrepreneurs, artists, mechanics, concessionaires, performers, ride builders, banner painters, railroad men, carnival owners, and families who risked everything to create places of wonder for communities across America.
Some built great railroad shows.
Some traveled with a single wagon.
Some became legends.
Others were almost forgotten.
Each wrote a chapter in the continuing story of the American Midway.
The American Midway Archives exists so those chapters will never be lost.
More Than a Collection of History
This is more than a website.
It is a living library.
Unlike a printed book, this archive continues to grow as new discoveries are made, new photographs are shared, forgotten newspaper articles are uncovered, and families contribute memories that help complete the historical record.

Inspired by David “Doc” Rivera
The American Midway Archives continues the lifelong work of David “Doc” Rivera—showman, carnival artist, banner painter, museum curator, historian, and author.
David believed every artifact deserved its story.
Every exhibit deserved an explanation.
Every visitor deserved to understand why history mattered.
His work preserving the American Midway inspired this archive and continues to shape its philosophy today.
His greatest lesson was simple:
History lives through the stories we choose to preserve.

About the Curator
The American Midway Archives is curated by Debbie Rivera, historian, researcher, author, and preservationist.
Working alongside her late husband, David “Doc” Rivera, she spent years helping restore museum artifacts, building historical exhibits, documenting the stories of carnival pioneers, and preserving the rich heritage of the American traveling amusement industry.
Today, she continues that work by researching, writing, and preserving the complete history of the American Midway through Living Biographies, historical articles, original research, and the American Midway Legacy Project.
She believes history is never truly finished.
Every newly discovered photograph, newspaper article, family story, or forgotten name helps complete another chapter of the American Midway.
Every story matters.
