Carnival Companies of the American Midway
The American traveling carnival developed through hundreds of companies—some operating for decades, others appearing for only a season or two.
This directory is a living historical index of carnival companies documented by the American Midway Archives.
The list began with carnival titles recorded in Joe McKennon’s A Pictorial History of the American Carnival and continues to grow through research in The Billboard, New York Clipper, newspapers, route books, advertisements, photographs, family records, and other primary sources.
Some companies changed owners while retaining the same title. Others changed names, merged, divided, or gave rise to entirely new shows. As those relationships are documented, individual company names will link to their own histories and to biographies of the men and women associated with them.
This directory is not considered complete. New companies and additional documented operating years will continue to be added as research progresses.

Related and Variant Company Names to Document
Some carnival companies appeared under more than one title or spelling. The Archives will preserve documented variants so researchers can find the same organization regardless of how it appeared in historical sources.

Where research establishes that two titles represent the same organization at different periods, the company history will explain the relationship rather than silently combining the records.
A Living Directory
A carnival title does not always identify its owner.
Shows were sold, inherited, reorganized, renamed, and sometimes continued for years under an established title after the original owners were gone.
For that reason, the American Midway Archives documents not only the carnival company but also:

Each company history will grow as new evidence is discovered.
If a carnival company is not yet included here, that does not mean it has been intentionally excluded. The American Midway Archives is an ongoing research project, and this directory will continue to expand.
